Background of the Study
Leukemia is one of the most common types of cancer affecting both children and adults, with the treatment regimens often involving complex chemotherapies, which can be challenging for patients to adhere to (Ali et al., 2024). Treatment compliance is crucial for leukemia patients, as delays or missed doses can result in disease progression and lower survival rates (Brown et al., 2023). Oncology nurses are integral to ensuring patient compliance by educating patients about their treatment regimens, monitoring side effects, and providing emotional support. In Delta State University Teaching Hospital, oncology nurses play a significant role in helping leukemia patients adhere to their treatments by offering tailored interventions and continuous care.
Nurses provide guidance on understanding treatment goals, managing side effects, and motivating patients to stay consistent with their medications (Williams & Simons, 2023). They also monitor for any barriers to adherence, such as financial issues, transportation difficulties, or psychological distress, and work to address these challenges proactively (Rao & Pandey, 2023). This study will appraise the role of oncology nurses in improving treatment compliance among leukemia patients at Delta State University Teaching Hospital, with a focus on the strategies used and the barriers they encounter.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of oncology nurses in managing treatment compliance, there may be challenges in their ability to fully support leukemia patients in adhering to complex regimens. Factors such as patient-related barriers, limited resources, and the nurses' workload might affect their ability to ensure compliance. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of oncology nurses' interventions in improving treatment compliance among leukemia patients at Delta State University Teaching Hospital.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the role of oncology nurses in improving treatment compliance among leukemia patients at Delta State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To identify the strategies employed by oncology nurses to enhance compliance with leukemia treatment regimens.
3. To assess the challenges faced by oncology nurses in ensuring treatment adherence among leukemia patients.
Research Questions
1. What strategies do oncology nurses use to improve treatment compliance among leukemia patients at Delta State University Teaching Hospital?
2. How effective are these strategies in enhancing treatment adherence in leukemia patients?
3. What challenges do oncology nurses face in promoting treatment compliance among leukemia patients?
Research Hypotheses
1. Oncology nurses’ interventions significantly improve treatment compliance among leukemia patients.
2. There is a positive relationship between the type of nursing interventions used and the level of treatment adherence among leukemia patients.
3. Oncology nurses face significant barriers that hinder their ability to improve treatment compliance among leukemia patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on oncology nurses working with leukemia patients at Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Delta State. The study's limitations include potential biases in self-reporting by nurses, challenges in obtaining reliable patient adherence data, and external factors like limited hospital resources that may impact the outcomes.
